The CW’s “May Day” Returns With a New Dispatcher
‘9-1-1’ is a drama series that follows the lives of first responders like police officers, paramedics and dispatchers. It was created by Brad Falchuk, Tim Minear and Ryan Murphy.
Corinne Massiah plays May Grant, daughter of Athena Grant-Nash (Angela Bassett). In this week’s episode, she goes through some heart-breaking events when her friend Darius becomes hostage by a conspiracy theorist.
What is NG911?
Next Generation 911 (NG911) is a national public safety system that enhances emergency number services by providing a faster, more resilient system that allows voice, pictures, videos and text messages to flow seamlessly from the public to a Public Safety Answering Point. It also improves PSAPs’ ability to help manage call overload, natural disasters and transfer of 911 calls based on accurate location data.
NG911 relies on broadband packet-switched technologies called Emergency Services IP Networks (ESInets) to carry voice and large amounts of varying types of data over the Internet. ESInets are standardized, engineered, managed networks that are intended to support a wide range of public safety communications functions including 911.
To successfully transition to NG911, states and local municipalities must coordinate a variety of emergency communication, public safety, legislative and governing entities to ensure that the new technology is properly implemented and operationally sound. These entities must address funding, governance, technical standards and best practices for the NG911 initiative and its deployment.
These requirements are essential to achieving the mission of NG911 and enhancing emergency number services across the nation. In addition, NG911 will require continued investment in cybersecurity and a long-term plan for its continuous monitoring, threat notification and vulnerability remediation.
Moreover, an effective NG911 program must include education and outreach to the public to increase awareness about the importance of a unified, coordinated NG911 system. This can be achieved through a strategic communications plan that “tells the story” on a regular basis to motivate community members to support funding initiatives for NG911 and its future implementation.
In addition, the development of a robust and secure NG911 infrastructure requires significant investments in equipment, infrastructure and services. This includes ESInets, communications and data infrastructure, network management tools, hardware, software, data security and other components necessary to deploy and operate an NG911 system.
It is also important to address cyber risks, as NG911 introduces multiple new attack vectors and allows for a greater capacity for interoperability and interconnectedness between systems. A comprehensive cybersecurity strategy must be developed and deployed, and cyber response drills should be conducted at least annually to ensure that the NG911 network is prepared for and able to respond to cyber attacks.
Who is May Grant?
The daughter of Angela Bassett’s Athena Grant-Nash, May (Corinne Massiah) is a bright, strong young woman who has been able to navigate some traumatic situations in the years she has worked as a 911 operator. She has been one of the show’s most dynamic and inspiring characters, and on Monday night’s episode, she was in another distressing situation where her mother, Athena, had to rely on her to de-escalate a call.
She has learned a lot about her own mental health in the last six seasons, and the show continues to highlight her growth as a person. She’s a hard worker who takes pride in her work, and she is an excellent communicator.
When she first came on the show, Corinne knew that it was a huge step for her to be in front of the screen and dealing with real-life emergency calls. She says, “I was scared because I wasn’t sure if she was going to be able to handle it, but she did really well.”
It was also a good episode for her to learn that her parents trust her and she can work with them when she needs help. She also saw that her mom was willing to let her deal with Erik, who was a big fan of the show and was looking for some way to get in contact with him.
The episode delved into the incel ideology, which is a group of heterosexual men who are devoted to an anti-women and pro-boyfriends agenda. The show tackled the issue with authenticity, Massiah told TVLine, and she hopes it raises awareness about these harmful ideologies.
What’s the deal with Claudette?
The CW’s 9-1-1 is bringing back its beloved team of dispatchers, and it just got a little more interesting with the arrival of new veteran Claudette (Vanessa Estelle Williams). A no-nonsense 9-1-1 call center veteran, Claudette has no problem asserting her dominance when she speaks her mind.
She also has a lot of empathy for her team members, which could be one reason why she’s able to get along with May Grant (Corinne Massiah), who was recently on the receiving end of some harsh criticism from her coworkers. Fortunately, the two women eventually work through their differences and even find common ground on some other things.
It was a great episode, and it really highlighted some of the challenges Claudette has faced in her life. She grew up in an abusive home, but she found her way through that and became a civil rights leader. In fact, she was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus in 1955 nine months before Rosa Parks’ famous arrest.
As a result, she often feels a lot of pressure from people around her, which is why she’s so hard to trust. However, Claudette is starting to change her ways and she’s starting to feel like a more valuable part of the team.
Claudette is also starting to get closer with Jharrel (James Lafferty), another member of the 4400 who has been struggling with her own issues. This makes a lot of sense because they’ve both been through trauma, so they can both relate to each other.
But Claudette isn’t just getting closer with Jharrel; she’s also beginning to see her own self-empowerment journey — and it’s a real kick! She’s also finding ways to express her feelings through photography, which is something she’s always loved.
With the way the show is progressing, it looks like Claudette’s story will take her to a whole new level, and we can’t wait to see where she goes from here! Watch the sneak peek below, and stay tuned for more on Claudette’s new journey as she reaches her fullest potential.
Will May and Claudette get back together?
In one of the most devastating moments of Monday’s “May Day,” May Grant and dispatching legend Claudette (Vanessa Estelle Williams) got into an argument that left them both trapped in a quiet room. But it wasn’t until a fire broke out in the building that they were truly separated from each other. Claudette panicked, but May was able to keep her calm and work through their differences until Bobby arrived to save the pair.
Claudette’s death will undoubtedly have a significant impact on her former coworker, Hen (Aisha Hinds). Her passing will be a major part of Jonah Greenway’s storyline in the coming weeks.
Even though Claudette’s death was sudden, it’s still a huge blow for May. She had been working through her issues with Claudette, and if she were to lose her friend, it would be devastating for her.
After the episode, Peter Krause told Entertainment Weekly that May and Claudette “had been patching things up for months” before their relationship finally fell apart. So there’s no reason for the two to get back together anytime soon.
Instead, they’re both learning from each other as the two dispatchers work through their issues together. It’s a lesson that will be important for both of them to learn.
For starters, Claudette was a strong woman who had been through much in her life. She was tough, sassy, and confident in her work. She was also a great listener, which meant she could easily understand how May felt when she was dealing with her daughter’s death.
However, Claudette was also a woman who suffered for years. She had a child that she was unable to protect from her mother. She then drowned her child and committed suicide.
Her pain had gotten so bad that she didn’t think she would ever have the strength to escape from her home again. But Nancy showed her that it was possible for her to live a full life.
It was a very hard thing for her to do, but she finally stepped up and did the right thing. During the process, she found a way to make peace with her past. She also learned that she can be a hero in her own way.
